Mimi Cave: It is political, but I also decided to focus on more guttural things— which is why I love tUnE-yArDs’ so much. It’s very visceral for me. Originally, the idea was to do something more simple and documentary-style. But, given the message that Merrill wanted to get across about arts funding getting cut, we wanted to do something visually in-your-face and express how kids really felt about music and visual art and dance being taken away from them.

Merrill Garbus: I know I respond better to art that doesn’t yell its position in my face but makes me feel something; then I’m much more inclined to act. So, we all know what’s happening [with arts funding being cut], but it’s another step to actually go out and do something— whether that’s giving money or time.”

My name is Lisa and I am a Librarian at a public library and a part-time K-8 librarian at the local school. I also serve as the Assistant Director on the board of another small rural library. I am also a fire spinner and belly dancer, knitter, cook, and collector of floaty pens! I love reader’s advisory and reference work. Making connections with my patrons and learning something new about them is one of my favorite parts of my job! Creating a library that is also a multipurpose community space for exploration and learning is so important, especially in our small island communities.

“Since when is a child unworthy of a state sponsored education that is worthy of obtaining and is useable in real world scenarios? Since when should a child be told that they are unworthy of such education simply because their zip code is 44112 and not 44022? Since when is it reasonable to trap a child in a cycle of redundancy that is known to exist? Since when is it reasonable for a child to be cramped into a classroom with 40 other kids with no air conditioning, heating, or electricity, no working windows, and broken desks? Since when is it reasonable for a child for a child to be denied special education services simply because a school can’t afford to or refuses to provide the services? Since when is it reasonable to pretend a teacher can’t be ineffective simply because he or she is a teacher? Since when is it reasonable for a child to be handcuffed, beat, shackled, and humiliated in the one place he or she is supposed to be safe and nurtured? Since when is it reasonable for things that are unreasonable to be ignored?”

Leon Rothberg, Ph.D., a 58-year-old professor of English Literature at Ohio State University, was shocked and saddened Monday after receiving a sub-par mid-semester evaluation from freshman student Chad Berner. The circles labeled 4 and 5 on the Scan-Tron form were predominantly filled in, placing Rothberg’s teaching skill in the “below average” to “poor” range.
